They must seek out and ally with other spirits to access the full variety of spells and abilities available, and these alliances are more temporary. Perhaps there is a core type of spirit (defined by archetype choice?) that the Shaman is strongly allied with, and this core spirit can regularly provide the Shaman with a very small list of spells wherever they go.

Figuring out how to do this without placing too much burden on the DM, and without too much bookkeeping for the player, could be difficult. Spirits might only grant their aid for a certain task, or only as long as the shaman behaves a certain way, or as long as the shaman is within their territory. This changes what spells and abilities they have access to. There are other interesting mechanics separated out into spells (binding spirits to totems, exorcisms, etc), but that's the basics.įollowing the example of the 2e class, I think this Shaman should be able to make bonds with different spirits at different times. If you anger a spirit, they can withhold spells and keep those spell slots unusable. Each spirit can grant spells from different spheres (2e’s version of Cleric domains) and of different levels. Some spirits require regular sacrifices and others simply want you to act a certain way or to do something for them. They must ally themselves with a spirit to be granted spells.

They each have their own unique version of a shaman ritual, but the important thing to note is that they all have a way to find and speak to spirits. The Spiritualist is an occultist who seeks to manipulate and control spirits. The Solitary is your standard hermit type who has greater sensitivity to nature. The Tribal Shaman is a community leader who seeks to build respectful relationships with spirits. There are three types of Shaman which could maybe make good archetypes. Let’s take a quick look at how the 2e Shaman works. Granted powers could be things like spells and channel-divinity style abilities. Personal powers could be things like ethereal sight, Tongue of the Sun and Moon, and Land's Stride. I like the idea that there is a distinction between whether a feature is a special power of the shaman or a power granted by spirits. They should have skills and features that involve nature stuff, perception, healing, and social interaction. They should have spells that focus on nature, healing, divination, and the control over and protection from spiritual and extraplanar forces.

They should have an ability that lets them mentally enter the spirit world to talk and make deals with greater spirits, and maybe an at-will power to speak to lesser spirits.

The casting stat could be either Wisdom or Charisma. The Shaman should obviously be a divine spellcaster. I found a 2e supplement that fits the feel I’m going for quite well, and I’d like to use that as a base. I also want something that can fit a Shinto Priest in a Japanese fantasy campaign. I want something that better reflects what shamanism actually is, as a matter of introspective spiritualism and being a practical community leader. The Tl dr is that other Shaman classes I’ve seen focus a lot of being witch doctors, spirit-beast-masters, and spooky tribal mages. I’ve gone ahead and stuck it in the comments below. I wrote a lot about Shamans classes I’ve found as well as the real-world definition of Shamanism, but it got kinda long in what is already a large post. The following is kind of a general brain dump to help me get my thoughts in order and hopefully get some good advice. I don’t have much experience designing a class like this, so I’m not entirely sure how to start. I’ve had a look around at 5e homebrew classes and I haven’t found anything that quite gets at the feel I’m going for.
